Why are iodine and selenium important together?

The two best-known hormones produced by the thyroid are T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). Iodine is an essential component of these hormones: a T4 molecule contains four iodine atoms, while a T3 molecule contains three.

But the story doesn’t end with thyroid hormone production. The thyroid primarily produces T4, which can be converted into T3 in various tissues throughout the body. This conversion involves enzymes known as deiodinases, which are selenium-containing proteins. This helps explain the physiological connection between these two trace minerals: iodine is required for the structure of thyroid hormones, while selenium is involved in their metabolism.

The free T4 (fT4) and free T3 (fT3) measured in laboratory tests refer to the unbound fractions of T4 and T3 that are not attached to proteins. However, iodine and selenium supplementation should not be viewed as a way to raise or lower these laboratory values. Instead, these two nutrients play roles in the physiological processes associated with normal thyroid function.
